Visit of the Tower

The tower of Macinella dates back to the Longobards (or rather to the 11th century). It is a very important historic site in the town of Casaglia. It was carefully renewed and, as the saffron is grown in the surrounding territory, it was bone of contention between the two factions of the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. Moreover, in the Middle Ages, King Manfredi and his army stayed here for a period of time. The tower has still its original loopholes which were once used for seeing enemies. The squared stones witness the fact that the town of San Gimignano was an ancient strategic place used for defence and control over the territory. It is possible to make an appointment in order to visit the Tower.
